How we started…

When V-EMS was first set up in 2002, it was intended to help reduce the isolation of international women and their families in RCT. The aim was to use social contact as a means of developing a network that would help reduce isolation and provide a member-led exchange of information and experiences. Over the years, we delivered English and confidence-building classes, local trips, and social events.

Big changes happening…

Fast-forward to 2021, and the circumstances of our local community of international women and men have changed quite considerably, there are many people from EU member states who arrived and settled here in the valleys. The result of the 2016 Brexit referendum has radically changed and hardened the attitudes of local people towards them and racism is on the increase. Added to that there is a number of refugees who are now living in our community catchment area as a result of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Covid-19 hasn’t helped the situation, with members of our Asian community experiencing blame and hostility.
